The story
The 2015 earthquake damaged schools and homes across Solukhumbu. With support from the alumni of Mahendra Secondary School, Lukla, FEDUC designed a Special Skills Development Program for Local Youths that turned reconstruction into training.
What we did
- Prepared a curriculum and training materials for constructing rural houses and schools damaged by the earthquake.
- Trained 30 local youths in construction trades for three months.
- During training, the trainees repaired schools and rural houses — and built one new house.
- Reported the results to the sponsor.
At the same time, FEDUC ran off-season vegetable production training for the remote Lukla area, helping families grow food and income through the year.
What came next
The model grew. With the Naulekh Foundation, Switzerland, FEDUC went on to run house wiring training (2018) and carpentry and building construction training (2020) in Paiya, Solukhumbu, and a multi-trade vocational package in Syabrubesi, Rasuwa (2017–2020) where 100 students made furniture, doors and windows for Wangfel Secondary School after it had to move following the earthquake.
